Valve Lockouts
Valve lockout devices stop a handwheel, lever or butterfly handle from being turned while a line is isolated. The collection includes ball valve lockouts that clamp the lever, gate valve lockouts that cover the handwheel, butterfly valve lockouts that block the handle, plus flange and universal clamp devices. Most used: the Universal Ball Valve Lockout for lever handles, the Butterfly Valve Lockout for butterfly handles, the Gate Valve Cover for standard handwheels and the Adjustable Gate Valve Cover for larger wheels. FAQ: valve lockout devices
Match the device to the handle. A ball valve has a lever: the Universal Ball Valve Lockout clamps over the lever in the closed position. A gate valve has a wheel: the Gate Valve Cover covers the whole wheel so it cannot be turned. A butterfly valve has a lever with a trigger: the Butterfly Valve Lockout blocks the trigger. Gate valve covers come in sizes from 25 mm to 330 mm wheel diameter; the Adjustable Gate Valve Cover opens up to fit wheels in between and takes several padlocks. For very large wheels, or valves with an unusual handle, a cable lockout threaded through the spokes and around the pipe does the job: see the cable lockout devices linked above.
Most valve lockouts are polypropylene or nylon: they do not rust, shrug off most process chemicals and work from about -30 to +80 °C. Where the device may be struck or heated, the steel ball valve lockout adds a steel cover. Pair any of them with a nylon or aluminium padlock outdoors so the lock does not seize.
